MELINDA
From an early age, I understood the importance of health, making my path to becoming a nurse a natural choice. However, my journey wasn't straightforward. I returned to college three years after high school, having initially ventured into banking during a time when ATMs and teller machines didn't exist.
In 2002, I graduated from Delta State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Torn between critical care and labor and delivery, I chose to float between both departments, enjoying the best of both worlds. Ultimately, I dedicated over five years to the Maternal Child Center (MCC), specializing in inpatient obstetrics and becoming an internationally board-certified lactation consultant.
When my husband and I expanded our family from one daughter to three, I sought a new adventure with more family-friendly hours. This led me to become one of the first nursing informatics analysts, helping to implement electronic health records. I later led the Wound Healing Center, promoting evidence-based wound care, including hyperbaric treatments.
Being a lifelong learner, I returned to school, anticipating a future in wound care. However, fate had different plans. After earning a Master of Science in Nursing from Delta State University in 2015, I spent nine years providing primary care in rural Arkansas and Mississippi. This experience profoundly influenced my approach to healthcare. As a nontraditional provider, I focus on uncovering root causes and treating conditions holistically, rather than simply prescribing medications.
My interests include hormone management, obesity, and diabetes. Balancing my professional life are my three daughters and two granddaughters. When blessed with downtime, I indulge in a good book by a crisp, clean pool during my favorite season, summer.
